English Syllabus : Preparation of SSC CGL
English and Mathematics are the two most important sections of SSC CGL examination, covering a total of 250 marks each (Tier I + Tier II = 50 + 200).
In Tier I of examination, English section has 50 questions with each question carrying 1 mark i.e. a total of 50 marks . In Tier II of examination English section has 200 questions with each question carrying 1 mark i.e. a total of 200 marks .
For proper preparation of this section one has to have the knowledge of the syllabus .
Syllabus of English section in SSC CGL (& other SSC recruitment examinations) can be divided into 3 major parts :
1) Grammar
2) Vocabulary
3) Reading Comprehension
These parts may be further divided into sub parts :
1) Grammar :
a) Noun
b) Pronoun
c) Adjective
d) Verb
e) Adverb
f) Preposition
g) Conjunction
h) Article
i) Tense
j) Subject-Verb Agreement
k) Conditional
l) Question Tags
m) Superfluous Expression
n) Voice
o) Narration
2) Vocabulary :
a) Synonyms
b) Antonyms
c) Homophones
d) One-Word Substitutions
e) Idioms
f) Phrasal Verbs
g) Spellings
3) Reading Comprehension :
a) Rearrangement
b) Cloze Test
c) Unseen Passage
The expected distribution of marks among these 3 parts are (out of 50) :
1) Grammar - 20 marks
2) Vocabulary - 15 marks
3) Comprehension - 15 marks
